Custer, South Dakota: Camping in Custer's Old Camp

After driving most of the day we arrived here in Custer, South Dakota. We are staying in Custer Gulch RV Park and boy is it ever quiet. Plus the outside temperature is in the low-mid 60's this evening -- perfect weather for sleeping with the windows open.

Most of today was spent driving through Wyoming. A big & beautiful state. Montana calls itself 'Big Sky Country' however I think Wyoming can match Montana any day -- we'll see when we get to Montana.

In Wyoming you could see forever and ever into the distance. Lots of scenery changes as well: golden fields, small limestone bluffs, streams filled with Cottonwood trees, etc. Actually the streams are mostly empty; the only way you can tell its a stream/riverbed is by all of the Cottonwood trees, whose deep roots allow them to survive during the time when the stream appears dry. A lot of the water is actually underground and the Cottonwoods appear to have the perfect solution on tapping this source of hydration.

Once we hit the South Dakota border we drove for about an hour to the town of Custer. You could see South Dakota's Black Hills in the distance and it was an exciting change of pace. Countryside here is a little more hilly and a little more rocky.

We are about 10 minutes from Crazy Horse Memorial and about 20 minutes from Mt. Rushmore, plus lots of other great sights for us to visit: Deadwood, Sturgis and the Badlands all come to mind. I'm sure there is more to see that we'll discover over the next week or so.

The picture above is a picture from Lt. Col George Armstrong Custer's Black Hills Exploritory Expidition in 1874. The campground we are staying in is located on the same ground as in the picture -- too cool for school. Custer ended up making this a permanent camp for his 7th Calvary until, well, until he no longer needed a place to camp after Little Bighorn. My understanding is the Little Bighorn Memorial is about 30 minutes from here.
No TV reception here and the Internet connection is really slow. looks like we'll have to sight see, read, and relax. Darn....

See Ya!

TOO COOL!

Chance is learning about the Wild West in Pre-K. Last week was the Badlands, this week is Rocky Mountains and next week is Yellowstone. He has been enjoying your pictures. Loved seeing the Elk he learned about last week.

LOVE,
