We left the University of Idaho college town of Pocatello yestreday, intending to spend the night around Butte, Montana. The plan being we would have about a 3 hour drive to our Alaskan Adventure launch point of Kalispell, Montana. Our friends who are joining us on this epic 6000+ mile road trip have a place in Kalispell which we will use to make our final preparations.
We spent a liesurely day of driving and the state of Idaho quickly passed under all six of our 22 inch RV tires, the toad following along dutifully, reassuringly visible in the rear camera.
Those of you who know my lovely wife Mary Lynn know that she is a 'dyed in the wool' warm weather person. After spending this winter in Arizona's sundrenched warmth, spending winter last year in Florida's classic sunshine, and the intervening months wandering throughout the Colorado Rockies and the warmth of the west, she has little tolerance (patience?) for the cold weather.
So of course, I convinced her that a trip to Alaska is the perfect way to spend the summer of 2009. How did I do that you ask?
Well, first I told her that while it's cold in Alaska during the winter, the summers are mild. What I didn't tell her is that the Alaskan summer starts the week before July 4th and ends the week after July 4th.
I also told her it doesn't rain all the time in Alaska, the bugs (specifically the mosquito's) are not nearly as bad as poeple say, and as I said earlier, it's not cold all the time.
Oh well, we'll see how true all this is once we get to Alaska.
See Ya!
