We arrived on Wednesday evening to cool weather and snow showers. Thursday am was cool however it quickly became cold and snowy. We tried to travel in the park however clouds and fog really prevented us from seeing the sights so we decided to explore the picturesque town of Banff.
It is a great little town that has a very European flavor, sort of like the Swiss Alps. I've probably manged to upset Europeans, the Swiss and Canadians all in just one sentence however I do love the town's look and feel.
Crammed full of typical tourist and ski resort types of retail shops with a sprinkling of hotels and restaurants, all located close enough to each other that you can easily walk to whatever suits your fancy.
The few moments when the sun was out and the fog/clouds lifted presented breathtaking vistas of mountains rising dramatically just beyond the town's small footprint.
In the evening we had dinner in camp with Dave & Mary Anne, all the while watching a true winter wonderland develop as the snow fell in heavy flakes and quickly accumulated. This am there was an inch or so of snow that is now quickly melting in the bright sunshine.
Turns out this is a major Canadian holiday weekend so we have not been able to get campground reservations
in Jasper, which is about 275 km north of Banff. Oh well, there weather forecast for Jasper is much worse than here so we'll hold off until Sunday before crossing the two mountain passes along the Ice fields glaciers. Hopefully we'll find a campground site Sunday night otherwise we'll be boondocking
(camping without electricity or water).
Currently I'm sitting in our car in the Banff Hostel parking lot 'borrowing' a very weak Internet signal so I'll sign off for now.
Reporting from the beautiful town of Banff, right on the Alberta/British Columbia border, I'll try to post again tomorrow.
See Ya!
