Red Bay, Alabama: WD-40 & Duct Tape Wizard

It's been said all you need to survive in life are the following two items: WD-40 & Duct Tape. Use according to these instructions:
  1. If it doesn't move and it's supposed to move, squirt it with WD-40.
  2. If it moves and it's not supposed to move, 'duct tape it'.

That's it. The secret to many a supposedly 'mechanically inclined' guy.

Anything that can't be fixed (at least temporarily) with WD-40 and/or duct tape needs professional help. And of course, many of the repairs accomplished with WD-40 & Duct Tape will eventually need to be re-done. No matter. Both items have saved the day for more people than live in China... well, more people than live in Mayberry, South Carolina... I mean, even the Apollo crew used duct tape to repair/improvise fender extensions on the moon rover.

Why do I share this secret with you. Just so you know the repair I made to the windshield on the RV today was exactly what any handy professional 'in the field' would have done. Let me start at the beginning.

This morning started with Mary Lynn finding a few drops of water on the dashboard of the RV. She had noticed a small draft coming from her side of the RV's windshield when we last drove the RV in November. Imagine my surprise this morning when I investigated and found a small gap about 1/8 inch wide and 4 inches long. I could see the sky way too clearly through this gap. Hint: you should not be able to see ANY sky between the windshield and the roof.

When I looked at this area from the outside I realized the windshield had separated from the RV in the top right corner. The solution? Let's see: moving and not supposed to move, that would be .... Duct tape (took me a minute to consult the instructions). Actually the duct tape worked quite well. We drove for about 9 hours today and at least half of that time it was raining.

And you know what? No leaks. Enough of an emergency repair to get us to Red Bay. Now the professionals get to remove and re-install the windshield.

Today was a long travel day. We left Wytheville, Virginia and travelled south to Nashville and then Chattanooga Tennessee, clipped the corner of Georgia, and then travelled across all of Alabama from east to west.

We arrived in Red Bay, Alabama, which is on the Alabama / Mississippi border about 10:30 pm EST. Of course Red Bay is in the Central time zone so we had to reset the clocks. The benefit? We get to sleep an hour later tomorrow. We start at 7am to get registered and 'in line' to have some warranty work performed on the RV.

Oh well. Despite a few issues it still feels great to be on the road again. Not sure how long we'll be here at the Tiffin service center since we don't have an appointment but I'm thankful the windshield issue popped up (or out?) now rather than when we are 2000 miles from the factory.

Always a great day on the road... See Ya!
